Type of Book: A multiauthored, edited volume.

Scope of Book: A comprehensive review of all facets related to the investigation and treatment of infertility, from the clinical evaluation of female and male patients to the most current assisted reproductive technology (ART) procedures to ethical and legal issues affecting the technology, concluding with the establishment and management of an ART program from clinical and laboratory perspectives.

Contents: Compiled in 20 chapters are contributions from 31 internationally renowned specialists in reproductive medicine spanning the key areas of interest in ART. Because ART is an applied science, the editors insightfully interweave chapters of both reproductive endocrinology and laboratory science, providing a balanced overview of ART. The authors' objective and extensive coverage of their assigned topics creates a focused practical guide to current clinical practice and the diagnostic and treatment options that are available to practitioners in the current ART setting. Less commonly addressed topics (eg, oocyte donation, surrogacy, recurrent pregnancy loss and miscarriage, pre-implantation genetics, patient counseling, ethical and legal aspects of the technology, practice management) are well covered in this textbook. Finally, the textbook contains many illustrations, figures, and photographs that enhance the text.

Strengths: The editors have prepared an exceptional contemporary textbook that is straightforward yet detailed in a concise, well-written, logical format. Each chapter provides a comprehensive reference list that will appeal not only to newcomers in the field but also to the established clinician desiring further knowledge on most subjects related to ART.

Deficiencies: Although the textbook's emphasis is on the clinical appraisal and therapeutic management of infertility through ART over the technical nuances of human embryology, illustrations related to oocytes and embryos are not included and would greatly complement sections related to in vitro fertilization techniques.
