Trainee Page: Summary of ASA 2004 Meeting

To the graduating class of 2004 and the postdoctoral trainees who have finally landed a real job, we extend our congratulations and wish you much luck in the future. Please remember that the American Society of Andrology can be a useful source, now and in the future, as you hunt for the perfect job. To aid in your quest, we would like to offer you some insight in how to go about searching for and making career job decisions. The following short piece by Dr Bomgardner and Ms Attaya provides some insight into this year's ASA meeting and its impact on trainees in attendance.

The location of Baltimore, Md, served as a winner for this year's ASA meeting, which, as always, was a success and pleasure to attend. It provided the wonderful opportunity to meet with well-known clinicians and basic scientists, as well as to get to know new faces in the evergrowing crowd of andrologists.

The society makes a great effort to cater to the trainee members, knowing that we are the future of andrology. It was a pleasure to work under the leadership of Dr Rex Hess and other trainee committee members, brainstorming and implementing new ideas. The trainee mixer provides the unique opportunity for students to meet not only with senior members of the society but also with other students in a relaxed environment. This year's trainee mixer consisted of 2 speakers, Drs Stuart Ravnik and Gregory Kopf, who spoke about different career choices consisting of working in administration and industry. The 2 speakers also did a wonderful job providing take-home messages to trainees: 1) it is perfectly okay to make changes in one's career path; and 2) follow your intuition and do what you love to do because that is what you will be best in. The mixer was also the perfect time to hand out NIH (National Institutes of Health) travel awards to more than 20 trainee members from around the world. Several students said they would not have been able to attend the meeting without the support from the ASA. The knowledge of the trainees and their scientific contribution to the field of male reproductive biology were extraordinary.

Also, at this year's meeting, the "Symphony of Stages CD" was donated by Dr Hess. All 100 copies of the CD were sold at $20 each, thanks to everyone in the ASA. The proceeds will go to establish the new Lonnie Russell Trainee Travel Award for the benefit of future trainees. Of course, the ASA meetings provide a great opportunity for sight-seeing, fine dining, dancing at the banquet, and just chatting it up with new and old friends. Such an environment that encourages and focuses on its trainee members makes it very easy to enjoy every moment of the meeting and look forward to attending every year.
