Grading Key

*****=outstanding; ****=excellent; ***=good; **=fair; *=poor.

Type of Book: Multiauthored, edited volume.

Scope of Book: A review of the analytical subdisciplines; emerging technologies; and ethical, legal, and financial issues affecting the current and likely future practice of assisted reproductive technology (ART).

Contents: This collective work, organized into 28 chapters from 53 contributors of international renown in reproductive biology and medicine, spans 4 major areas including gamete biology, technologies, clinical practices, and ancillary legal and ethical considerations. A hallmark of the work is the emphasis on evolving approaches in reproductive medicine, which include novel strategies of in vitro spermatogenesis/oogenesis, cryopreservation of mature/immature gametes, and means for modification of the male genome. In addition, some fresh insight is offered for the recurring problems in decision-making that face practitioners in the contemporary ART setting in chapters that address new diagnostic and treatment options, as well as embryo selection criteria.

Strengths: The editors have done an excellent job of producing a topical and authoritative work that is simultaneously a joy to read. This was no doubt accomplished by selecting competent authors who provided a comprehensive treatment of the subject rather than offering solely a review of their own contributions to the field. Provocative treatises interspersed with technical ones will maintain the reader's attention, and serves as an effective editorial tool.

Deficiencies: Although the 2 chapters that address contraception are well written, they are out of place in a volume dedicated to ART. Color illustrations are sparse, which is unfortunate for the contribution by Hewitson et al, where gray microtubules and spindles take a distant second to those in green, and limits reader comprehension.

Recommended Readership: Reproductive endocrinologists, embryologists, andrologists, urologists, and research scientists in both academic and private settings.

Overall Grading: ****
