Grading Key

*****=outstanding; ****=excellent; ***=good; **=fair; *=poor.

Type of Book: A comprehensive, multiauthored (54 authors to be exact), referenced textbook that was an initiative of the International Society for Study of the Aging Male (ISSAM), a rather new society established for the purposes of increasing clinical awareness of health issues of adult men and encouraging gender-specific research and practice to improve men's overall health care.

Scope of Book: As broad as it gets. The stated purpose of the textbook is to "draw together relevant gender-specific knowledge across the whole field of men's health," and the book holds true to its goal.

Contents: Chapters are grouped by topic area and range from the more typical ones, such as the endocrine system (which includes a good deal more than androgens), nutrition, and the genitourinary tract, on through topics such as the cardiovascular system, the aging sensory system, and the central nervous system and psyche. An international array of academic experts, a number of whom are members of the American Society of Andrology, have authored the chapters.

Strengths: This is a rather unique compilation of topics emphasizing adult male health issues. Generally, the chapters present solid, thorough, and unbiased information, and most are highly referenced. The presentations are usually very readable, but in the typical style of a textbook; some include tables and/or graphs.

Deficiencies: Same as the usual textbook... it takes a while to get the book in print, so if you are an expert in a particular topic area, skip that chapter, because the data aren't the most recent.

Recommended Readership: This is not light bedtime reading for the general public, but it should prove very useful to general practitioners, other physicians, and clinical researchers interested in men's health issues and would be a solid addition to any academic-based library.

Overall Grading: ****
