Table 2. Inhibition of fertilization by Ushercell*

*For each experiment, superovulated rabbits (aged 8 to 11.5 months) were artificially inseminated, either with a washed sperm suspension after pretreatment (see footnote {dagger}), or with the untreated sperm suspension (see footnote ¶), as described in "Materials and Methods." Twenty-four hours after insemination, eggs were recovered from the oviducts of the females, and were scored for fertilization. The average % fertilization per rabbit and 90% confidence limits were calculated.
{dagger}Evaluation of Ushercell was conducted during 2 experiments. Spermatozoa were treated with either Ushercell (1.0 mg/mL) or TALP medium (control), as described in "Materials and Methods." After 15 minutes at 37°C, rabbits were inseminated. Each experiment contained 2 control rabbits and 1 Ushercell-treated rabbit. One rabbit in the control group was lost due to failure to ovulate. Evaluation of heparin and dextran sulfate was carried out during 2 experiments. Each experiment contained 1 control and 3 treated rabbits.
{ddagger},||Values with different superscripts differ (P <.01, Newman-Keuls multiple range test).
¶Evaluation of contraceptive efficacy of Ushercell gel after vaginal application was carried out over 3 experiments as described in "Materials and Methods." Fifteen minutes before artificial insemination, 0.75 mL of the gel was vaginally applied. Control rabbits received the same volume of formulation base (not containing Ushercell).
